#5 — Escape from New York: Escape from Chicago #1 — Mad Cave Studios

Snake Plissken returns in a brand-new continuation of John Carpenter's cult-classic universe from writer Kyle Higgins and artist Val Rodrigues, with Snake now working as a coyote smuggling people and contraband between dangerous prison territories. His latest assignment sends him toward Chicago to extract a woman wanted by the city's warlord, giving the series an opportunity to expand the dystopian world well beyond Manhattan with new locations and characters. Mad Cave is treating Snake's return as a substantial launch, supporting the first issue with eight covers and talent including Dan Panosian, Francesco Francavilla and Mike Perkins.

The collector hook here isn't simply another licensed adaptation—Mad Cave is expanding Snake Plissken's world with new characters and mythology. Kyle Higgins' involvement makes this particularly worth watching if Escape from Chicago succeeds in establishing characters that remain part of the franchise.

#4 — Ghost of a Ghost #1 — Dark Horse Comics

Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson spin Agent Jian out of Giant Robot Hellboy and into her own four-issue series, joined by artist Michael Avon Oeming and colorist Taki Soma for a psychedelic 1960s spy-fi adventure. After exposure to enkeladite gives Jian newfound powers, she joins a mysterious spy ring attempting to locate stores of the dangerous substance—although determining who can actually be trusted becomes increasingly complicated. This is particularly interesting for Mignolaverse collectors because it elevates an existing supporting character into a starring role while directly expanding concepts introduced in Giant Robot Hellboy.

This has an appealing character-elevation angle: Agent Jian isn't brand new, but this is her first opportunity to carry her own title. If she becomes increasingly important to the wider Hellboy Universe, Ghost of a Ghost #1 becomes a logical issue for collectors to revisit.

#3 — Hellraiser: Resurrections – Hell's Council #1 — BOOM! Studios

The fourth chapter of BOOM!'s five-part Hellraiser: Resurrections event turns its attention to Butterball, revealing that the Cenobite's apparent death at the end of Hellbound: Hellraiser II wasn't really the end. Writer Nero Villagallos O'Reilly and artist Francesca Ciregia explore what happened afterward as a mysterious woman nurses the wounded Cenobite back to health and gradually works her way into his mind—and perhaps even his heart. Because all five Resurrections specials are laying the foundation for BOOM!'s new ongoing Hellraiser series, this chapter's additions to Butterball's history could carry significance beyond the one-shot itself.

This series continues to do something collector-friendly: take recognizable Cenobites and add new canonical history around them. Butterball's return and the mysterious woman involved in his recovery are the developments I'd watch for future relevance once the ongoing series gets underway.

#2 — Conan the Barbarian: Tides of the Tyrant-King #1 — Titan Comics

Jim Zub launches a new four-part Conan epic with artist Jesús Merino as the supposedly vanquished Thulsa Doom's dark power begins stirring again and threatens to unleash the dead upon the living. That gives the opening chapter an especially strong hook for longtime Conan collectors: the return of the Tyrant-King of Atlantis and another confrontation involving one of the mythology's most recognizable villains. Titan is also treating the miniseries as a visual collector event, including a four-part connected-cover sequence by Merino alongside Roberto de la Torre, Gerardo Zaffino, Stuart Sayger and other variants.

Thulsa Doom is the hook that elevates this above another routine Conan adventure. Add Jim Zub, Merino, De La Torre and the connected-cover chase, and Tides of the Tyrant-King #1 has plenty for both Conan readers and cover collectors.

#1 — Star Trek #1 — IDW Publishing

IDW launches its new flagship Star Trek ongoing for the franchise's 60th anniversary, with Christopher Cantwell and Dennis Menheere putting Captain Seven of Nine in command of the Enterprise-G on a mission beyond the four known quadrants of the galaxy. The Enterprise must relocate the dying Avuran people, leading the crew into the previously unexplored Epsilon Corridor and giving the new series territory largely untouched by previous Trek stories. More importantly for collectors, this isn't an anniversary reprint or standalone celebration—it's the actual beginning of IDW's next major Star Trek era, complete with a large variant program reaching high-ratio incentives.

This has the week's clearest combination of new-series significance, potential first appearances and enormous franchise recognition. Seven taking the Enterprise-G beyond known space opens the door to new civilizations, characters and concepts, so I'd pay particular attention to exactly what—and who—debuts in this first issue.

What's Buzzing This Week?

• 🔑 Established supporting characters are moving into the spotlight — Seven of Nine takes command of the Enterprise-G, Agent Jian receives her first solo series, and Butterball gets new history and relationships explored. That's a particularly interesting combination for collectors because these books aren't merely introducing new stories—they're potentially changing the status of existing characters.

• 🌎 Familiar universes are expanding into new territory — Escape from Chicago moves Snake Plissken beyond the familiar Manhattan setting, Ghost of a Ghost expands the enkeladite mythology, and Star Trek #1 sends the Enterprise-G beyond the four quadrants. New settings frequently mean new characters, villains and concepts, giving collectors concrete story developments to monitor.

• ⚔️ Legacy villains are providing major hooks — Thulsa Doom's return drives Tides of the Tyrant-King, while Butterball's survival reconnects BOOM!'s new Hellraiser material to the classic films. Both books use established mythology as the foundation for stories designed to move those universes forward.
