#5 — Space Ghost vs. the Herculoids #1 — Dynamite Entertainment

Two classic Hanna-Barbera properties collide as writer David Pepose and artist Jonathan Lau reunite for a crossover that pits Space Ghost and the Twins against Zandor and the Herculoids after the Federation invades Amzot in pursuit of the rare mineral Quasarite. More than a simple versus story, Dynamite says the miniseries sets the stage for Space Ghost's next adventures and begins the countdown toward Season Three of the current comic series. #4 — The Big Shakedown #1 — Dark Horse Comics

Writers Jordan Blum and Tim Seeley team with artist Scott Koblish for a four-issue post-apocalyptic Los Angeles noir following former private investigator Ester Blanco five years after a catastrophic earthquake leaves the city abandoned by the government. A missing-person case that initially looks like Ester's ticket out instead pulls her into a network of cults, conspiracies and corruption operating among those who refused to leave the ruined city. The combination of an entirely new protagonist, an original world and established creators gives The Big Shakedown #1 the kind of ground-floor appeal worth watching among collectors looking beyond established franchises.

This is my under-the-radar sleeper in the group. It doesn't have the built-in collector audience of Space Ghost, D&D, Hellraiser or Mark Spears, but a fresh #1 with a distinctive concept and experienced creators can be exactly the kind of book that surprises people once word of mouth starts.

#3 — Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft #1 — Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse returns collectors to the gothic-horror world of Ravenloft with Bram Stoker Award-winning writer Amy Chu and artist Ariela Kristantina, as monster hunter Ez D'Avenir investigates why Ravenloft itself appears to be falling apart. Her search leads into the frozen wasteland of Lamordia in pursuit of an undead creature that could hold the answer, only for Darklord Viktra Mordenheim to turn Ez from hunter into hunted. The series promises to unite Rudolph van Richten's protégés from across Ravenloft, creating a strong hook for D&D players as well as comic collectors interested in the property's established horror mythology.

Don't underestimate the D&D collector crossover here. Ravenloft has a dedicated following of its own, and a story pulling together characters from across that universe gives this #1 more significance than a generic licensed adaptation.

#2 — Hellraiser: Resurrections – The Deep Gospel #1 — BOOM! Studios

Writer Tini Howard and artist Jenna Cha take over the Resurrections saga with a story centered on the classic Female Cenobite, resurrected and rebuilt by the Engineer after being nearly destroyed by a human. Rather than submit to the Engineer's plans, she rejects her intended purpose and is cast into the Nidus, where larval Cenobites fight for survival, putting a familiar character onto a potentially transformative new path. Most importantly for collectors, The Deep Gospel remains part of BOOM!'s five interconnected Resurrections one-shots leading directly into the upcoming Hellraiser ongoing series, making new mythology introduced here worth keeping an eye on.

The phenomenon surrounding Mark Spears Monsters #1 continues with a seventh printing, this time transforming the landmark first issue into a special Black, White & Dead Edition presented in bloody monochrome with matte cardstock covers to celebrate Monsters Day. Spears' early-1980s supernatural saga—originally spun out of his hit trading-card property—has demonstrated remarkable staying power, and reaching seven printings is itself a noteworthy demand signal for an independent comic.
