Top 10 Free Comic Book Day Releases 5/2/2026
We count down our top 10 Free Comic Book Day titles.

What is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)?
Free Comic Book Day is the original industry-wide event founded in 2002 by retailer Joe Field. It traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in May. While it was the sole event for over two decades, it is now one of two parallel celebrations happening on May 2, 2026.
Why did the "Split" happen?
The separation occurred because the logistics of the comic industry changed fundamentally following the bankruptcy of Diamond Comic Distributors in 2025.
New Ownership: The "Free Comic Book Day" trademark and branding are now owned and operated by Universal Distribution (with help from Lunar Distribution and Diamond UK).
The PRH Departure: Penguin Random House (PRH) now handles distribution for Marvel, IDW, and others. Rather than paying to use the Universal-owned "FCBD" branding, PRH launched its own "Comics Giveaway Day" for its publishers.
Result: FCBD remains the "legacy" event, but it no longer includes the "Big Two" marvel titles or several other major indie houses that have moved to the PRH event.
